Journalistic Experiences

On Friday 28/04/23, 110 EEB4 students had the chance to meet Mr. Georgi Milkov – a famous Bulgarian journalist, international reporter, war correspondent, writer, TV host, and editor-in-chief of a magazine. He shared his rich experience as a correspondent from the hottest spots all over the world,  Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya included.

Broken Walls

On 14 November 2022, 460 P4 and P5 pupils took part in the « Broken Walls” project. This charity project gave two interactive concerts including native American songs, music and storytelling. This initiative has helped convey a positive message of tolerance, acceptance and identity and engage the pupils to express themselves through music and movement.

Philo Day

On 16 and 17 March 2022, 250 secondary pupils from all European Schools and linguistic sections participated in the “Philo Day” event. The main objectives of this event are to encourage students to work with others in a team and deepen their appreciation for philosophy. An event like Philo Day enhances the image of the school and encourages inter-school exchanges. The student volunteers of Philo Day were given the chance to develop useful skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork

Oral Story Telling Workshops

On 22 March 2022, the English-speaking section of nursery and primary and two P4 L2EN classes took part in Oral Story Telling Workshops with storyteller Niall de Burca. He interspersed age and language appropriate stories with some music, singing and dancing and movement. These interactive workshops gave the children an opportunity to hear and participate in a live session where they improved their listening skills, extended the use of imagination and ability to tell an oral story.

Anti-bullying project

On 12 November 2021, the S3 students of the francophone section attended the screening of the documentary “A bonne école” which follows the journey of several students who learn to fight against bullying. Mr Jacky Pamart then took the floor. Mr Pamart is one of the participants of the documentary who also trains students to become mediators to fight against bullying and to promote a more peaceful school climate. This project made the students aware of the seriousness of bullying and how to fight it in our school. The idea of creating a charter was also raised in order to give concrete expression to the ideas raised.

Philo Day

On the 3rd and 4th of March 2021, 473 participants from S5 to S7 from all language sections of several schools – EEB2, EEB4, Mol, Bergen, Munich and Varese; Professors from universities such as ULB and KU Leuven – participated in the online event Philo Day. Invited university professors, European School teachers, and students shared ideas and reflections based on this year’s theme of change through plenary lectures, workshops, and the ethical dilemma impromptu contest. The student volunteers had an opportunity to develop their organisational, communicative and problem-solving skills.

Theatre project

“If we can’t go to the theatre let the theatre come to us!”

The English Department organised a theatre project ‘If we can’t go to the theatre let the theatre come to us!’. Thanks to this project, classes have been enjoying wonderful performances from The National Theatre in London: Peter Pan, Treasure Island, Jane Eyre, Medea, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Wonder.land.

Philosophy Workshop

On February 10, 2021, some S1 and S2 students took part in a philosophy workshop with Mr Van Kossem, a philosophy professor at KU Leuven and independent philosophical trainer. Students were introduced to the astounded and widely known ancient Greek philosopher Socrates and Mr Van Kossem initiated how feelings, thoughts, beliefs and values are all related to philosophy. This workshop introduced philosophy at a younger age to enhance many important  personal qualities such as problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills.

January 27th. Forget you not: Dialogue with Simon Gronowski

On February 2, 2021, all S6 students attended a video conference with Simon Gronowski who survived the Holocaust by escaping deportation in Convoy No. 20 train, on 19 April 1943, which would have taken him to Auschwitz. This project is not only an interview with a Holocaust survivor but also represents an educational journey to deepen the understanding of the history and tragic events that took place in Auschwitz and during the deportations.

A scuola di legalità

In February 2020, in the framework of the promotion of the culture of legality and citizenship, the Italian sections of the European Schools of EEB1 and EEB4 organised a show retracing the life of Judge Giovanni Falcone, followed by a debate with the actor and director Dario Leone.

Training by Prof. Kristof Van Rossem

On the 9th of March 2020, Prof. Kristof Van Rossem gave a training to secondary teachers of different linguistic sections. Mr. Van Rossem is a teacher at the KU Leuven and a Belgian expert on Socratic dialogue, one of the methods in Philosophy for Children (P4C) and Philosophizing with Children (PwC).

Kelly’s Day Out

On 28th November 2019, the whole of the Anglophone primary section (as well as P5 Language 2 students) were invited to a performance by the English Theatre Company, returning for their third year. They performed “Kelly’s Day Out”, a wonderfully abstract rendition of Cinderella with twists taken from many different traditional tales from English literature. A wonderful experience to engage, to entertain and inspire our pupils.

Dermot Bolger Literary Readings

On Wednesday 13th November 2019 over 400 pupils from Primary and Secondary P4, P5, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5 and S6 had the privilege of attending 5 different readings/discussion panels by the Irish author Mr Dermot Bolger. Dermot spoke very eloquently to pupils and teachers about what it means to write, the joys of writing about daily experiences and how he has learned to express and develop his own life through his writing.

KiVA

From September 29 to October 4, 2019, two teachers, a Bac Coordinator, an Educational Advisor, and a Head Advisor went to Finland where a KiVa anti-bullying training was taking place. They visited a local school to experience first-hand how KiVa lessons are implemented in a school situation.

Filem´On International Film Festival for Young Audiences

On 24 October 2019, 39 nursery and primary pupils from the Estonian section including SWALS pupils from P4 and P5 took part in “Filem’On”, the International Film festival for Young Audiences in Brussels, which screens over 100 films for 2 to 16 year olds and organises many film-related activities.

Emotional Intelligence

On 17 and 18 October 2019, 156 pupils from the Romanian section, from nursery school to S2, took part in an educational project on emotional intelligence. This project, divided into two main parts, allowed on the one hand to promote reading among children and on the other hand to teach emotional intelligence through games in order to help children identify the emotions they feel and understand their importance.

English Theatre

On October 7, 2019, some 350 students from the English section attended a performance of Chaucer’s tales by the English company The Playtime Theatre Company, followed by a series of workshops. It gave our students a wonderful opportunity to experience at first hand the highly entertaining and indeed, very humorous content of this great writer’s tales.
