capoeira4Capoeira is one of the most fascinating aspects of Brasilian culture and has becomeextremely popular.  Its a form of marital art which has afro-brasilian origins.  It is different to other maritial arts due to its humouus and acrobatic edge. It requires incredible versatility. Capoeiristas are athletes, dansers, acrobats, commedians and musicians all at the same time.

This activity was launched as part of the extra-curricular activities programme this year and is taught by Mestre Dende and his club « mundo capoeira ». If your child is interested, please contact the periscolaire team. Enrolments are open all year and there are still places available.

  • Extra Curricular Activities

Enrolments for extra-curricular activities have opened. Here are some answers to a few FAQs.

What's new this year? This year's programme is based on last year's as we try to ensure that children can continue with activities they have started. However, there are some exciting new options – like a school radio project.

Why are there no lunchtime activities? The school has changed its timetable in Primary and Secondary and, after discussion with the school, it was agreed that the scheduled lunch hours are too short to enable children to eat lunch and do an activity. There is now the possibility to do activities after school and to take the second bus home, space permitting. Or why not use the new dedicated bus to Schuman on Wednesday afternoons at 17:00?

How do I book transport? The APEEE cannot guarantee spaces on the second bus departures as these lines are organised on the basis of those students who have school lessons. However, if there are spaces on the lines (which we anticipate) they can be used by children enrolled in extra curricular activities. If you are interested, please contact the transport office once the routes have been published (in August) and identify the line and stop you would be interested in using. To book the Wednesday bus to Schuman – just use the code in the enrolment system. Prices will be determined on the basis of the number of children who enrol.

How are the prices fixed? Prices are calculated on the basis of the costs associated with each course and not to make a profit. This year, the APEEE has reduced the prices for the majority of activities.

  • Extra Curricular Activities

The extra-curricular activites programme is now underway for M1-P2. Next week sees the start of the programme for P3-S5. With 42 activities open this year don't forget to have a look at the website and see if there is something for you! Please note that if you do an activity after school the timetable has been planned so that your child can participate in the full session and then take the second bus departure (spaces permitting).  This only applies to activities finishing at 16:15.

There are some changes to timings as a result of amendments to the school timetable - all the details are on the website. The affected activities are basketball, Hellenic Art and Culture and Chinese. If your enrolement needs to be modified, you will be contacted by the office. music

Don't forget that you can enrol for private music lessonsthroughout the year. Why not have a look at the different instruments available - there is a wide choice and the teachers offer different time slots so you can find one which best matches your child's timetable.

Finally, there are a number of activities which do not quite have the required number of enrolments to run - please encourage your friends to participate so we can offer the best possible programme!

  • Tips for the start of term

New to the school? Just started in Primary or Secondary? Generally confused about how and whom to contact about what? Here is a basic guide to help you work out who does what!

    Questions about transport/canteen/extra-curricular activities?

The APEEE runs the buses, the canteen and the extra-curricular activities programme ( 'the services'). If you have an issue with any of these:

            1. First, check our website – there is a lot of information on the services on the dedicated pages which are updated.
            2. Second, check your online enrolment page – this is where you will find details of the status of your enrolments and any payments that are outstanding.
            3. Finally, please only telephone the office if you can't find answers elsewhere – the phones are very busy and our staff also need time to carry on processing applications.

    Questions about the garderie?

The APEEE does not organise the garderies!

We have some info on childcare on the APEEE website. If this doesn't help, you will need to contact the OIB!

    Questions about timetables/ teaching arrangements?

The timetables are organised by the school and the lunch hours/ bus departure times and timings for all activities are determined in relation to the timetable provided by the school to the APEEE. If you have an issue which relates to timetabling or your class arrangements, it is likely that it is the school that is able to help you. Please remember there is also a lot of information available on the school website.

Another useful source of information is your class representative(s). Don't forget to elect them at your teacher parent meeting! Class reps play a key role in representing parents and in ensuring communication channels flow smoothly throughout the year. Details of the roles and responsibilities of class reps are on the APEEE website.

  • Why should I learn Chinese?

chinaLast year, the school proposed Chinese lessons to students in Secondary.  The APEEE was asked to take over the organisation and they became part of our extra-curricular activities prgramme.  This year they are again being offered by the APEEE...so why should you/ your child take part?

A lot of people speak it! Mandarin Chinese is the official language of China. It is effectively spoken by nearly 900 million people.  It is the MOST widely spoken language in the world.

It is a hard language but not as hard as is sometimes suggested. Chinese is a tonal language - and this is what most people find complicated in the spoken language.  Spoken grammar is actually relatively simple...no verb conjugations...no tenses.

You will learn about lots of other things. China has an immensely rich history and culture. The extra-curricular activites course is not just focused on language acquisition - the idea is to explore the Chinese culture more generally.

It will open up other opportunities within the school: The school has a good relationship with China. We hosted a New Year celebration and as is set out in the 2014 school plan, a three year programme with the Chinese Mission allows the School to send students to China during the summer holidays.

How do I find our more?On Friday 14 November, there will be 2 presentations at 12:15 and 13:00 for secondary students on the courses being offered at EEB4. All interested secondary pupils are welcome.  The teachers will be there, together with the Extra-curricular activities language coordinator.
